The historical building that since 1856 housed the collection of Pavel Tretyakov, the founder of the Gallery, has the permanent exposition of over 1300 pieces of Russian art of the XI – early XX centuries, starting from pre-Mongol icons and mosaics to landscape, portrait and historical painting including such masterpieces of international significance as Savior, Image Not-Made-By-Hand (Novgorod icon of the XII century) and The Appearance of Christ before the People by Alexander Ivanov.

The expostion presents a comprehensive collection of works made by such great artists as Vasily Surikov, Vasily Vereshchagin, Ilya Repin, Valentin Serov and others.

A visit to the permanent exhibition of the Tretyakov Gallery at Lavrushinsky Lane, 10 offers a remarkable journey through nearly a thousand years of Russian artistic history. This historic building, located in the heart of Moscow’s cultural district, houses the museum’s most celebrated collection — masterpieces of Russian art from the 11th century to the beginning of the 20th century.

The exhibition begins with the spiritual and artistic origins of Russian culture: ancient icons and religious works that defined the visual language of medieval Russia. Among the greatest treasures visitors encounter is the famous “Trinity” icon by Andrei Rublev, a masterpiece of Orthodox iconography admired for its harmony, symbolism, and spiritual depth.

As visitors move through the galleries, the narrative of Russian art unfolds across the centuries. The collection includes monumental historical paintings, lyrical landscapes, and expressive portraits created by the great masters of the 19th century. Works by artists such as Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Isaak Levitan, and Vasily Surikov reveal the cultural, social, and emotional landscape of Russia during a transformative era.

Visitors will discover some of the most iconic works in Russian art, including Repin’s dramatic “Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan”, Shishkin’s majestic forest landscapes, and Levitan’s deeply poetic views of the Russian countryside. Each gallery tells a new chapter in the evolution of artistic expression, from realism and romanticism to the early experiments that paved the way for modern art.

The building itself adds to the experience. Its distinctive façade, designed by Viktor Vasnetsov, evokes the atmosphere of a Russian fairy tale, welcoming visitors into a museum that feels both intimate and monumental.

Exploring the Tretyakov Gallery’s permanent exhibition is more than a museum visit — it is a journey into the soul of Russian culture, where centuries of creativity, faith, and national identity are revealed through art.
