Vladimir Begletsov (Conductor)

• Recipient of the St Petersburg Government Prize for Culture and the Arts (2015)

Vladimir Begletsov graduated from three faculties of the St Petersburg State Conservatoire – piano (class of Professor Vladimir Nielsen), choral conducting and opera symphony (class of Professor Vladislav Chernushenko). He was a prize-winner at the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation Symphony Conductors’ Competition (1992).

Since 2004 Vladimir Begletsov has been Artistic Director of the St Petersburg Concert Choir (the former Smolny Cathedral Chamber Chorus). From 1985–2004 he was a conductor of the St Petersburg State Glinka Cappella, while from 1991–2007 he was Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Boys’ Choir of the Glinka Choral School and, from 1996–1998, a conductor of the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra. From 2002-2006 Begletsov was a senior lecturer at the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire; he frequently gives master-classes. In 2014 he was appointed Director of the Glinka Choral School and Artistic Director of the Boys’ Chorus.

Begletsov’s pupils include soloists at Russia’s leading opera houses, among them Pyotr Migunov, Daniil Shtoda, Dmitry Voropaev, Yuri Vorobiev and Boris Pinkhasovich. As a guest conductor, the musician has appeared with numerous ensembles including the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg State Academic Cappella, the St Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, the State Hermitage Orchestra, the Slovenian Radio and TV Symphony Orchestra, the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic, the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, the St Petersburg Soloists, Classica, the Sinfonietta de Picardie and Musica Viva.

He has collaborated with such musicians as Nikolai Alexeyev, Valery Gergiev, Alexander Dmitriev, Alexander Kantorov, Kazimierz Kord, Ravil Martynov, Valentin Nesterov, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Saulius Sondeckis, Sergei Stadler, Yuri Temirkanov, Alexander Titov, Vyacheslav Chernushenko, Ildar Abdrazakov, Irina Arkhipova, Gennady Bezzubenkov, Irina Bogacheva, Olga Borodina, Nicolai Gedda and Zurab Sotkilava.

In 2015, 2016, 2017 he conducted a multi-thousand combined choir’s performances in St Isaac’s and Palace Squares in St Petersburg on the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture.
