Roman Trekel (Bass-baritone)

Born: 1963 - Pirna, Saxony, Pirna, Germany


The German baritone, Roman Trekel, studied at first violin and oboe, moving to vocal training after entering the Berlin Music Conservatory. There he studied with Heinz Reeh from 1980 to 1986.


A member of the opera workshop of Berlin’s Deutsche Staatsoper from 1986 to 1988, Roman Trekel joined the regular ensemble in 1988. He has signed a guest contract with the opera of Frankfurt/Main. In 1996 he made his debut at the Dresden State Opera and at the Bayreuth Festival. His first major success, which attracted international attention, was as Pelléas at the Deutsche Staatsoper. Trekel has won several international singing competitions. Having won the first prize at the Walter Gruner International Lieder Competition in London, he was invited to appear in concerts and solo recitals, e.g. at the Schubertiade Feldkirch, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the NDR radio station in Hannover, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Wigmore Hall, London, and the concert halls of Vienna, Zürich and Brussels. He has also performed at many European festivals (Flandern-Festival, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Salzburg Festival, Festival of Ancient Music in Innsbruck). Since 1989 he has held a teaching post at the Hans Eisler College of Music in Berlin.


In the studio Roman Trekel has recorded for a number of labels, including RCA, Decca, Teldec, and Harmonia Mundi, including the operas, Wozzeck, Der Freischütz, Tristan und Isolde and the recently highly acclaimed Lohengrin conducted by Daniel Barenboim.
