Karen Akopov (Bass)

Karen Akopov graduated from the Leningrad Institute for Shipbuilding in 1979. In 1988, he graduated from the Leningrad State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire. As a student, he performed bass parts in Dargomyzhsky’s Rusalka (The Miller) and Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride (Malyuta Skuratov) at the Conservatoire and parts in operas by Leonid Desyatnikov and Sergey Banevich at the Zazerkalye Theatre.

In 1989, he joined the Mikhailovsky Opera. Here he performed bass parts in the operas The Golden Cockerel and The Tale of Tsar Saltanby Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II, Boris Godunov and Khovanshchina by Modest Mussorgsky, The Tale of the Priest and of His Workman Balda by Dmitry Shostakovich, Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Mary Stuart by Sergey Slonimsky, Faust by Charles Gounod, Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin, Carmen by Georges Bizet, Les trois mousquetaires by Alexander Tchaikovsky, Le Fou by Marcel Landowski, The Brothers Karamazov by Alexander Kholminov, and The Naked King by Tikhon Khrennikov (productions by Stanislav Gaudasinsky).

 

At the Theatre, he also performed Benoît and Alcindoro in various productions of Puccini’s La Bohème, Malyuta Skuratov (The Tsar’s Bride), The Coward Lion (Lebedev’s The Wizard of the Emerald City), Deputy (Verdi’s Don Carlos), Bartolo (Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia), Orgon (Michem’s Tartuffe), Il Commendatore (Mozart’s Don Giovanni). In 2013, he took part in the Russian première of Britten’s Billy Budd (Dansker), directed by Willy Decker.

Nowadays, at the Mikhailovsky Theatre Karen Akopov performs bass parts in the operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gioachino Rossini, Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, Gaetano Donizetti, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, and Boris Asafiev.
