David Geringas (Conductor)

Cellist and conductor, David Geringas has been a pioneer in introducing contemporary Russian music to the West by composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina, Edison Denisov, Alfred Schnittke and Viktor Suslin, many of whom have dedicated works to him.

As a soloist David Geringas has performed with many major international orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra(Tokyo) and the London Philharmonic.

Following his extensive experience playing with such great conductors as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kyril Kondrashin, Ferdinand Leitner, Simon Rattle, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Michael Tilson Thomas, David began ten years ago to conduct himself. Opportunities quickly arose and he has conducted among others, the Hamburg Symphonic Orchestra, the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra (Leipzig), the Orchestra da Camera di Padova and the Forum Philharmonic Orchestra in Holland. He is currently guest conductor of the South-West German Chamber Orchestra in Pforzheim and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to his conducting and solo engagements David Geringas also enjoys acareer in chamber music. His regular duo partner is his wife Tatjana Geringas, also a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory where she studied in the masterclasses of Heinrich and Stanislav Neuhaus. Their recitals have received high critical praise around the world.

As a soloist David has an immense repertoire which reaches from the Baroque period into contemporary music and several of today’s major composers have dedicated musical works to him. Thus the cello concerti of Sofia Gubaidulina and Peteris Vasks were first performed in 1994 and became a worldwide success and in 1999 David premiered the Cello Concerto of Lepo Sumera with the Residentie Orkest.

In 1992 David Geringas was awarded the highly endowed prize “Kultur Aktuell” from the Cultural Association of Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) for his special commitment to contemporary music. In June 1999 he was awarded the “Order ofthe Grand Duke Gediminas” for his worldwide efforts to promote the music and composers of Lithuania and in 2002 won the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts.

David Geringas has received alarge number of awards for his recordings. He was granted the prestigious “Grand Prix du Disque” of the Academy Charles Cros for his recording of the 12 cello concerti by L. Boccherini. His rendition of chamber music by Dutilleux was awarded the “Diapaison d’Or”, and the first recording of the cello concerti by Hans Pfitzner received the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik” in 1994.

Born into a musical family in Lithuania, between 1963 and 1973 David Geringas studied the cello at the Moscow Conservatory of Music with Mstislav Rostropovitch, from whom he received his musical inspiration. In 1970 he won the first prize and the gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Cello Competition and began his international career after moving to Germany in 1975.
