Joshua Weilerstein (Conductor)

Joshua Weilerstein is the Artistic Director of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. He also enjoys a flourishing guest conducting career throughout Europe and the USA and is known for his clarity of musical expression, unforced manner and deep natural musicianship. His enthusiasm for a wide range of repertoire is combined with an ambition to bring new audiences into the concert hall.

In the 2017/18 season, he will make his debut with the Bamberg Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and returns to the Oslo Philharmonic, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Netherlands Philharmonic. On tour with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and Juan Diego Florez, he will perform in Berlin, Paris, Vienna and Amsterdam. In North America, he will work with Vancouver Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and St Paul Chamber Orchestra and will return to Australia to conduct the West Australia Symphony and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras.

Weilerstein’s success at the 2009 Malko Competition, where he was awarded both the First Prize and the Audience Prize, has led to him establishing a number of very strong relationships, for example with the Oslo Philharmonic – where he returns each season, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Stockholm Philharmonic, and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Elsewhere in Europe, he has conducted the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, SWR Stuttgart, and the NDR Hannover Orchestre National de Lyon, BBC Symphony, London Philharmonic Orchestra, all of which have re-invited him.

In July 2017, Weilerstein made his debut at the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall where he conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra with sister, Alisa Weilerstein as his soloist. He made his debut with the National Symphony Orchestra Washington with Yo-Yo Ma as soloist in May 2017.

Joshua Weilerstein believes passionately in programming both traditional and contemporary repertoire and is committed to presenting, whenever possible, a piece by a living composer in each of his programmes. He is committed to music education wherever the opportunity arises both on and off the podium and hosts a successful classical music podcast, Sticky Notes, for music lovers and newcomers/beginners alike. Weilerstein was actively involved in Young People’s Concerts during his time as the Assistant and Associate Conductor with the New York Philharmonic, and served as Concertmaster of Discovery Ensemble, a Boston- based chamber orchestra dedicated to presenting classical music to inner-city schools in Boston. In his capacity as Artistic Director of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Weilerstein is deeply committed to the educational and Discovery/Decouvertes series of concerts for children and families.

Joshua Weilerstein feels that it is essential to have an open communication between the stage and audience and is always excited to hear from musicians and audiences alike. He is accessible on social media for conversation about the future of classical music, programming, and the experience of concert-going.
