Isabelle Partiot-Pieri (Set Designer)

Set Designer

Isabelle Partiot-Pieri graduated as an architect in 1982, when she presented her first opera project in the Parc de la Villette in Paris, which she transformed into a true "musical garden". While continuing to work as an architect, she worked for two years with such directors as Antoine Bourseiller, Jerome Savary, Jean-Marie Simon and Pierre Jourdan, as well as with set designers Jean-Paul Chambas and particularly Bernard Arnould.
At the same time, she also worked in television and cinema. Her future direction of her career was defined when she met and worked with director Francesco Rosi, who filmed Carmen with Julia Migenes, Placido Domingo and Ruggero Raimondi in 1983 in Andalusia. She then abandoned architecture in order to devote all her attention to opera.
Isabelle Partiot-Pieri worked as an assistant with many directors for several years. She first designed sets in 1986 in Montpellier for a production of Les Dragons de Villars with director Bruno Stafano. She subsequently designed sets and costumes for Jacques Karpo?s Aida in Ljubljana (1991), sets for Stanislav Gaudasinsky?s Montsegur in Marseilles (1992) and sets for Mireille in Marseilles and Bordeaux (working on the latter two productions with designer Jean-Claude Quilici).

In 1992, she directed and designed the production and costumes for Lucia di Lammermoor at the Opera de Nantes.
Has worked constantly with Charles Roubaud since 1987. Their first work together was La cenerentola in Marseilles (where she designed the sets and costumes); this production enjoyed great success and was shown on tour in many theatres all over Europe over a ten-year period. Designed the sets for Dialogues des carmelites in Avignon (1988), Katia Kabanova (1992), Pelleas et Melisande(1990, 1995 and 2001), Norma (2000), Nabucco (2002) in Monte Carlo and I puritani in Washington.
As a professional architect, Isabelle Partiot-Pieri has a special talent and ability to transform great historical venues. In 1990, for example, she designed Charles Roubaud?s production of Lucia di Lammermoor and, in 1991, I puritani in the court of the old Hospice de la Charite in Marseilles. She also designed sets for productions in Orange, including Aida (1995), Turandot (1997), Norma (1999) and Don Carlos (August 2001) as part of celebrations commemorating the year of Giuseppe Verdi.
